Chlorella is a freshwater unicellular green alga which contains essential amino acids, protein, minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, and chlorophylls
- Bioavailable form of vitamin B12
- Source of protein
- Vegetarian source of iron
- High in chlorophyll
- 20% of fatty acids are Omega 3s
Chlorella is rich in the carotenoids beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and lutein. It’s an abundant source of vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, and minerals iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and zinc. Chlorella stigmatophora is particularly rich in lipid-soluble (A and E) and B-group vitamins [including vitamins B1, B2 (riboflavin), B6 (pyridoxal), and B12].

Benefits of Chlorella
- fatigue (candida overgrowth, infections, blood sugar imbalances or chronic fatigue syndrome)
- nutritional deficiencies
- hormonal disorders
- blood sugar imbalances
- blood lipid levels
- improved immune function
- chelate heavy metals
- reduce free radicals
Chlorella is rich in chlorophyll and beta-carotene. It is described as an important source of proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and phosphate. Additionally, it was shown that β-glucans derived from Chlorella vulgaris possess immunomodulatory, antitumor and hypoglycemic effects.
Improve Immune Function
Chlorella may help to improve immune function. One study showed chlorella had a significant increase in Natural Killer (NK) cell activities. This may result in immunomodulating effects in some individuals.
Natural killer (NK) cells are effector lymphocytes of the innate immune system. NK cells control several types of tumors and microbial infections by limiting their spread and subsequent tissue damage. Recent research highlights the fact that NK cells are also regulatory cells. These cells engage in reciprocal interactions with dendritic cells, macrophages, T cells, and endothelial cells. NK cells can thus limit or exacerbate immune responses.
NKT cells can influence the activation state and functional properties of multiple other cell types in the immune system. They modulate immune responses against infectious agents, autoantigens, tumors, tissue grafts, and allergens.
Improve Blood Lipid Levels
Chlorella supplements may provide the potential benefits of reducing serum lipid risk factors. Studies show have shown benefits in triglycerides and total cholesterol in individuals with mild hypercholesterolemia.
Positive effects on serum lipid risk factors, related to carotenoid intake, and on the antioxidant status have also been observed in vivo. As a result, chlorella may be effective at lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis.
Reduce Free Radicals
Chlorella contains numerous nutrients, including antioxidants. It is thought to exert antioxidative functions by scavenging free radicals created by various environmental factors such as smoking. A six-week study in smoking males showed chlorella supplementation resulted in the conservation of plasma antioxidant nutrient status. There was also an improvement in erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities in subjects.
Animal studies have shown chlorella to increase in performance and oxidative metabolism. These studies also noted beneficial effects on metabolic disorders and improved serum lipid profiles.
An animal study on obese mice had improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and inhibited the growth of visceral fat cells when supplemented with a chlorella extract. It is possible chlorella may help with insulin sensitivity. Always consult a physician if you are taking medications that for insulin control or you have issues with blood sugar before starting a new supplement.
Sourcing & Precautions
Contamination and cultivation processes can affect the quality of chlorella, always look for high quality, third-party tested, broken cell wall chlorella product. Chlorella contains iodine, those with thyroid disorders should consult a physician before taking chlorella. Always consult your physician before starting a new supplement routine.
